Barbas (バルバス, Barubasu) is the god of rule, power and vengeance and one of the many animal gods of Crystania. During the War of the Gods, Barbas remained neutral and fled to Crystania with the other neutral gods. There, he discarded his divine body, took the form of a tiger and served the land as the animal god king of rule (支配の神獣王, shihai no kami-jū-ō). Centuries later, Barbas acquired the body of Ashram and made Ashram's followers his servant. Now in a human body, he outmatched the animal gods and began calling himself the “Gods’ King”. Barbas sought to conquer all of Crystania, but while doing so, he struggled for dominance over Ashram's body. Unable to drive out Ashram's soul, he sought a new host, Redon, but was defeated by him, Pirotess and due to a lack of control over his human host.

History[]

Barbas is the god who governs rule. During the War of the Gods he was called the "Antagonist of the Dragon Lord". When the gods of light and gods of darkness clashed during the war the neutral gods, including Barbas, fled from Alecrast to Crystania in the south. Once there they sealed their souls in the bodies of animals, thus becoming the animal gods. Barbas chose to seal his soul with the tiger. The land of Crystania was divided by the gods and Barbas took the region of Berudia. His followers were bestowed with the power to morph into a tiger. Another god, Rumiss, was appointed to protect the land from outsiders and constructed The Gods’ Wall, an enormous green scaled wall without an entrance, sealing the land away.

Crystania was ruled by its own cycle created and maintained by the animal gods. Barbas insisted on creating a new cycle.

Many centuries later people from the island of Lodoss, in search of new land, reached Crystania but were unable to enter because of The Gods’ Wall. Barbas spoke to their leader Ashram and promised them access to Crystania but only in exchange for Ashram's body. Ashram agreed. Once in Crystania, the former Marmo people built homes, set up farm lands, founded villages and constructed a castle called Dayton castle. Ashram's body, now under the control of Barbas, was kept in the castle's throne room. After acquiring the strong body of Ashram's Barbas surpassed the power of the animal-sealed fellow gods and broke away from the established cycle. He was nicknamed the Gods’ King and planned to conquer all of Crystania.

As the gods were powerless against Barbas the people of Crystania began opposing him. Various groups banded together and formed the Fang of the Animal.

Many years later Redon, a young man from Da’nan region was on the run for assassins and ended up at the Gods’ Wall. Unable to continue he lamented not being able to stand up against the Deputy. Barbas, sensing the anger within Redon, promises Redon the power he seeks and creates an opening in the Gods’ Wall. Redon and his friends take it and enter the land of Crystania.

In Crystania, Barbas’ henchmen Garudi and Muha are looking for a dark elf that goes by the name of Sheru. Once she is located in a village occupied by the Fang of the Animal they raid it. Barbas appears and instantly wipes out the entire village, including many of his own men, only to demonstrate to Redon the power he could obtain.

Later, in Dayton castle, Sheru attempts to use the Chaos Ring on Barbas, hoping it would weaken his control over Ashram's body. Redon and his group arrive and Barbas easily dispatches Redon's friends, again in an attempt to show Redon the power that is waiting for him. Barbas clarifies he only wants Redon, as all others are useless to him. He promises Redon the power he seeks if he kills Sheru first. Redon refuses and Barbas gets enraged. Sheru uses this moment to throw the Chaos Ring at Barbas. Though Barbas manages to halt it before it hits him, the ring does begin to affect him, ultimately leading to his defeat at the hands of Sheru.
